Adopting an Adult Dog

There are many reasons for adopting an adult dog. A potential owner may not have the time or knowledge to train a puppy, or it may be as simple as wanting a more mature companion. Local veterinarians usually have a bulletin board where other clients post notices of available pets. This is a good source, because the veterinarian is often familiar with the offered pet and can give you insight into its behavior and general health. Another good place is XXX or Humane Society websites. These sites do not have personal contact with the animals, but offer photos and descriptions from the owners themselves. Many are rescued animals or pets the owner can no longer keep. Finally, visit the local animal shelter. There is a small fee for spaying or neutering and rabies shots. Adopting an adult dog is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Once you have done your research, your new pet will easily adapt to you and your home. Your adult dog will be grateful for a nice, new home and you will quickly grow to love your new pet.

How to Choose a Puppy

All puppies are cute, but not all dogs are good to have around. As you watch and hold the puppy, take note of whether it seems healthy. Is it the right size for its age? Are its eyes and ears clean? Is its coat clean and healthy looking? Also, try to get a feel for its personality. Does it play well with the other puppies? Does it enjoy being held by you? See if the puppy is curious, shy, rambunctious, playful, inquisitive, or lazy. If any of these features jump out at you, decide whether this is a good fit for you. Of course, your training and affection will help shape the puppy into its future self, but by carefully watching and interacting on that first day, you may be able to detect certain traits that have already appeared and thus select the perfect puppy.
